“Whatever good is done for good men is never done in vain” - Plautus

In September 2010, the Medical Intervention Team went on it’s second journey. Again, we visited beautiful Myanmar, to help people in need at no cost. In this report, we want to describe some of our experiences, impressions and results to you. Like the year before, our destination was Ayudana Hospital, near Mandalay, which is led by a Buddhist monastery school. Many patients were curiously waiting for us already, some of them made the effort of traveling for several days, just to meet the doctors of MIT.

While three teams performed surgeries simultaneously, other specialists took time to have consulting hours and choose patients for the following days. Most of them were children at the age of 6 months to 7 years, who suffer from cleft lip and palate. Another common diagnosis was severe scarring because of burns on hands and arms, which is no rarity in Myanmar, because of the many open fireplaces. The local doctors don’t have the resources for a appropriate first aid, so the scarring of a ‘simple’ burn can lead to immobility of whole body parts. Besides seeing this many suffering people, we also experienced some joyful moments, for example reunions of doctors and their successfully treated patients from the last year. They were now able to get their final examination, if necessary closing surgery.

Moreover, our dental consultation hours enjoyed great attendance. The visitors were thankful for the provided prophylaxis and dental cleaning, free of pain. All in all we able to perform about 80 successful surgeries and 150 dental procedures on children and adults. We thank the locals for their hospitality and also the donors who support us, not only financially. You are making this project possible.

Be a part of it!
